Ever since I watched Steve Rinella doing it in Hawaii for the first time, I have been enchanted by the idea and practice of spearfishing. The freedom to go hunting anywhere along the coastline without needing a boat, license or permission to hunt dinner felt like a world far removed from fielsports. The technical challenge of freediving and either stalking after prey (aguatto) or waiting in ambush (aspetto) offers a meditative state of focus. The day-to-day worries give way to the joy of selectively hunting for your next meal and the underwater landscape we have in the UK is a special place to spend time hunting in.
For me, the discipline brings along with it a sense of grit and adventure experienced by those in the maritime trade and the stories told in ink on their skin. Hunting in the sea is a juxtaposition of astounding beauty and raw brutality where learning to work with the conditions is the key to success.
Aguatto Aspetto Hunter T-Shirt
Taking inspiration from the rich history of tattooing in the British maritime environment, this design features an epic stylised conger eel coiled around a wooden speargun. Flanking either side of the design are the Italian phrases aguatto and aspetto, a nod to a Mediterranean hunting trip and a place of much British adventure.
